Flow State
What is the flow state? The flow state, also known as “the zone,” is a mental state in which a person is completely focused and immersed in what they are doing. This can happen when a person is engaged in an activity that they are passionate about and that requires their full attention. When someone is in the flow state, they often feel a sense of joy, creativity, and flow. For me its the endurance flow state that I try to achieve when training and racing.

This is why you hear athletes often talk about being in the zone during competition. When you’re fully focused on the moment, you’re more likely to perform at the best of your abilities. But the flow state isn’t just for athletes. Anyone can experience it – you just need to find an activity that you’re passionate about and that allows you to focus your attention.
How can you achieve the flow state?
While it might seem like the flow state is something that only happens spontaneously, there are things you can do to increase your chances of entering this state. Here are some tips:
- Find an activity that you’re passionate about: This is the first and most important step. If you’re not interested in what you’re doing, then it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to enter the flow state. But if you find an activity that speaks to you, then you’ll be more likely to get lost in it and enter the flow state.
- Set aside time for your activity: Make sure that you have enough time to get into the flow state. If you’re rushing or feeling rushed, then it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to enter this state.
- Eliminate distractions: Turn off your phone, and focus on your breathing during your endurance activity to eliminate distractions. You need to be able to focus your attention completely on the task at hand to enter the flow state.
- Get into a rhythm: Once you start your activity, try to get into a rhythm. This can help you focus your attention and enter the flow state.
- Be patient: Don’t expect to enter the flow state right away. It might take a few miles for you to get into it. Just taking down miles until you feel the effortless method of running, biking, swimming, etc.
- Focus on your breathing: One of the best ways to stay in the flow state is to focus on your breathing. Once you find your rhythm, pay attention to your breath and try to breathe evenly. This will help you stay in the flow state and maintain your focus.
The flow state is a great way to improve your endurance performance. But it’s also a great way to find joy and mediative mindset in running and other activities. So, don’t be afraid to experiment and find what works for you. And remember, it might take some time to get into the flow state, but it’s worth it!
My first and favorite flow state came from running, and still to this day – I’m able to hit the flow after miles 2-3.. especially during long-distance racing (such as a half marathon).
